The ICF has defined six key components of coaching that need to be present for coaching to be effective. These are: relationship building, planning, learning, implementation, evaluation and reflection.
Relationship building involves establishing a trusting bond between coach and client by showing integrity, respect and empathy. This allows the client to feel comfortable sharing his/her problems with the coach.
Planning involves mapping out short-, mid- and long-term goals for the client. It helps the client identify what he/she wants to achieve and measure success along the way.
Learning is about recognizing and implementing new skills and techniques that help the client reach his/her goals. This can come from listening to or reading about other people's experiences or looking at how others have achieved similar results.
Implementation focuses on putting into practice what has been learned during the coaching session and beyond. This means following up and supporting the client if he/she decides to continue with planned changes.

The 5 Crucial Elements of Successful Coaching
ICF Credential holders are members of a self-regulating community of elite coaches who keep clients and the coaching industry accountable. They pursue and complete rigorous education and practice standards, providing unquestionable credibility to their dedication to coaching excellence.
The ICF has established four levels of credentialing: Associate, Professional, Master's Level I and Master's Level II.
An Associate Coach is qualified to coach individuals or small groups. They may have completed an accredited program with a minimum required number of hours for their level of certification. Associate Coaches do not need to be licensed by their state. The only requirement for this level of certification is that you must be a member in good standing of the ICF.
A Professional Coach is certified to coach teams or larger groups. They must hold a valid license from their state, have completed an accredited program with a minimum of 200 hours for their level of certification, and must also be members in good standing of the ICF.
Master's Level I Coaches are certified to coach individuals or small groups who have additional training in specific topics within coaching. These topics include neuroscience for mental health coaches, trauma therapy for coaches who work with victims of abuse, relationship counseling for couples' therapists, and life planning for retirement coaches.
