We enjoy receiving awards because they make us feel wonderful. They are a recognition of a job well done, as well as justification for the misery, self-doubt, and hard effort that went into obtaining them. We might feel proud, pleased, thrilled, and delighted when we get an award. They validate us and increase our self-esteem.
The feeling of winning is greater if the award is prestigious or comes from a reliable source. But even if it is not so prestigious or does not come from a source we trust, we can still feel happy about getting one. That means the reward itself isn't that important; what matters is that we get something nice after the victory.
I used to think that I didn't deserve any awards because my achievements were due only to hard work. But now I know that success has many parents, and I'm grateful to everyone who helped me become who I am today. So, when I receive an award, I don't feel proud or happy, but rather relieved that all my efforts have been noticed and appreciated.
