Qualifications for IEEE Life Membership An active IEEE member who has reached the age of 65 is automatically granted Life Membership. Has been a member of IEEE for a period of time such that the sum of his/her age and years of membership equals or surpasses 100 years. Is an inactive member who has not been absent for more than five years and who has submitted evidence of continued involvement in science or engineering.

The next election for new members will be held in 2020. All candidates must be members in good standing of IEEE at the time of their nomination and should have had no disciplinary actions taken against them during their current term of office. Nominations may be made by any person, but must be supported by two qualified voters from each of the regional divisions within which members are elected. A list of all registered voters within each division is maintained by state election officials and is available to interested persons upon request. The vote itself takes place via email. Members selected by ballot will be notified by email and required to respond within 30 days of notification. If a member does not respond within this time frame, a replacement will be chosen by voting on the candidate again. Voting on remaining candidates will continue until all positions are filled.
